What are optimisation constraints?

Optimisation is used in the background of the EPOS toolbox to find the best solutions for implementing industrial symbiosis. Constraints are used to limit the search space for the algorithms to provide solutions in the context defined by the user. In the user interface, defining boundaries on some KPIs provides an opportunity for the user to specify the local context and some restrictions for the solutions which will be generated. For example, a user may be restricted to a certain amount of investment and would thus apply a boundary that the investment cost should not exceed a certain limit. Conversely, a company may have goals to reach a certain level of renewable electricity use or energy efficiency which can be implemented as a lower boundary for the solutions. Any solutions which are generated by the EPOS toolbox will conform to these limitations but be careful, reasonable constraints must be used! If these boundaries are impossible, there might not be any solutions generated!
